CHILDREN’S Day is not just for kids.
More than 500 events for parents and the young ones are taking place nationwide on Children’s Day, with quite a few happening in Wellington.
Wellington Children’s Day at Civic Square: A special visit from the WotWots, a children’s Zumbatomic Zumba class, a Capital E upcoming festival show performance, face painting, the Balloon Man, story-telling, art activities, and sausage sizzle, Civic Square, 11am - 2pm, March 6.
Steam Locomotive Rides: Ride two Steam locomotives and the 1938 built diesel railcar, other activities for children available, Silver Stream Railway, Upper Hutt, March 6.
Children’s Week at Hutt Hospital: Kotahi tatou nga whaanau katoa, ‘Families sharing their love for each other’, Arts and craft activities, painting, family handprint making, family gardening and word games, Children’s Ward, Hutt Valley Hospital, first week of March.
Every Child Counts ‘Children’s Day Event’: A picnic with children of all ages, the Funky Monkeys and Ash Graham, clowns, bouncy castle, SPCA petting zoo, and a cross party panel of MPs, Parliament grounds, 11am -2pm, March 3.
Family Picnic Day: Share a picnic lunch together with football, swing ball, soccer, three legged races, egg and spoon race, Upper Hutt Baptist Church, 12pm - 3pm, March 6.
Kapiti Expo: Centred around safety and crime prevention, but also with a family fun day focus, Southwards Car Museum, 10am - 4pm, March 6.
Celebrate Children’s Day and Go Green: Family day with a fun St Patrick’s twist, free entertainment throughout including the furious fiddles of Celtic band Hobnail Boots, Champion Irish Dancers, games, petting zoo, quality goods, and an international foodcourt, The St Theresa’s Shamrock Carnival, Plimmerton, 11am - 2.30pm, March 19.
Celebrating Kiwi Kids: Colouring competitions, Emergency Department, Wellington Hospital, March 5-6.  
Fairy and Pirate Tea Party: Pack a picnic tea, put on your fairy wings and pirate hats and come along to have some fun with the Sparkle Fairies and Pirates, children must be supervised, Khandallah Park, 3.30pm - 5.30pm, March 6.
Children’s Day at Wellington Zoo: Watch Zappo the Magician and rock out with the Popsicle Band, have your face painted and play on the bouncy castle, celebrate the year of the forest with Tane the Tui, dress up as your favourite forest creature, and be in the chance to win some fantastic prizes, Wellington Zoo, 9.30am - 5pm, March 6.
Bring the Kids to ZEALANDIA: Free entry for kids, free ranger talks, kaka feeding, boat rides, check out the weta hotels, spot a tuatara with the help of our roaming guides, children must be accompanied by a paying adult or member, ZEALANDIA, 10am - 5pm (last entry at 4pm), March 6.

    Vinyl lovers take note: thousands of records are up for grabs at Wellington’s only record fair.  Collectors are invited to The Southern Cross to peruse piles from by ten different traders. Vinyl Club is a collaboration between Evil Genius, Rough Peel Music, Slow Boat Records, and Vanishing Point. Vinyl Club, The Southern Cross Bar, 12-4pm, May 26.

  • Miss a meal 23/05/2012 11:30:00 a.m.

    Food rescue group Kaibosh has been encouraging Wellingtonians to miss eating one meal during May. Kaibosh rescues food from retailers that’s good enough to eat, but not good enough to sell, and redistributes it to charities working with the disadvantaged. The group wants people to miss a meal and instead donate the money they would have spent. It hopes to raise $20,000 for a walk-in cool room.

    Wellngton's Pulse netball team has appointed two new directors as the franchise continues to strengthen both its governance and management teams. Prominent Wellington barrister Tim Castle and Land Information NZ acting chief executive Sue Gordon were appointed at the franchise’s AGM last week. 

  • Record breaking race 23/05/2012 10:31:00 a.m.

    Records are already being broken five weeks out from the Armstrong Wellington Marathon. More than 5,000 runners and walkers from nine different countries will line up at Westpac Stadium on June 24 for the marathon, half marathon, 10 kilometre and kids’ magic mile events, making it the biggest marathon event ever to be held in Wellington.

    How can Wellington be the launchpad for more global businesses? The best 200 innovators, entrepreneurs, investors, and other business leaders from around the region will be hashing it out at Grow Wellington’s World Class New Zealand 2012 forum on May 29. The aim is to develop a pathway for creating global businesses from the Wellington region.
