Fringe dance all wrapped up
Deirdre TarrantThere were four dance offerings in this year’s Fringe Festival and they came and went at lightning speed.
I missed Scribble Scape and The Grind Date, but I did get to the other two.
Do You Still Think of Me featured Maria Dabrowska and Kristian Larsen, both experienced and compelling performers in their own right and here, collaborating, reminiscing, confronting and colluding in a dance theatre work that was driven by song and relationships.
This was a short and sophisticated late night treasure at the Paramount where the deep seats and Larsen’s amusing self deprecating slide show set the stage for an intimate hour in the company and safe hands of controlled performance and clear personal destinations.
Future Astronauts, made by producer/choreographer Kyah Dove at Bats Theatre was strong and aggressive with a daunting programme note that informed us that the work was an exploration of the human race.
Heady ambitions and a derivative feeling in the vocabulary and staging made this performance episodic and confusing to watch. That said, there were some great sections that hit the button and triggered response –Zoe Dunwoodie with her head in a box in a bra/boyfriend monologue, Andrew Gunn at a disembodied tea party, Daniel McCarroll delivering a life lecture to dolls – Jimi Pham coiling and uncoiling seemingly disconnected limbs… A brave start and a new dance maker to watch but I felt calm consideration of why and what the audience are being asked to consider would be the next step.
