Switched on to switch off
In Wellington the event is being marked at the Carter Observatory where Mayor Celia Wade-Brown will officially turn off the lights for a special hour of telescope viewing.
Planetarium shows will also be held at 7pm and 9.30pm.
Earth Hour started in Sydney in 2007 as a stand against climate change. Within a year Earth Hour became a global sustainability movement with more than 50 million people across 35 countries participating. Last year was the biggest ever Earth Hour with a record 128 countries switching off.
This weekend is also the first anniversary of the relaunch of the Carter Observatory and a special day for children and families is planned on Sunday.
Observatory spokesperson, Vicki Irons, says special activities will include moon hopper races, face painting, and planet-making, with a cake cutting at 2pm. Children will get free admission to the observatory for the day from 10am to 5.30pm.
