Everybody needs good neighbours
HOST a street party, bake a cake, say “good morning” or pop round for a cup of tea; there are a hundred ways to celebrate neighbourliness this weekend, and you needn’t do them all. Not-for-profit community agency LIFEWISE is co-organiser of Neighbours Day Aotearoa, which takes place on March 26 and 27.
“If you’re new to New Zealand you may not know the appropriate thing to do here. It’s about creating connections between people, and giving them excuses to approach their neighbours; taking away the fear factor,” says Lesley Mynett-Johnson, LIFEWISE development manager.
“[Neighbourliness is] about having someone there when you have a crisis, or to watch your house when you’re away or look out for older people. The benefits incorporate social, economic and environmental factors.”
