Titillating fashion
The centrepiece is a tailored waistcoat, and to make these Clare’s had to work around female chests – a skill not required of her nowadays.
“I had a womenswear label many eons ago, so I can handle the well-carved factor of some boobs,” she says.
General manager at Coco, Jonny McKenzie, originally intended to get the clothing made at a uniform shop.
“I decided I wanted something more unique, with the amount of effort going into the [cinema’s] design. Clare’s very good at picking up on vague ideas and turning them into a reality, and she has a great eye for detail,” he says.
Boobs weren’t the only things on Bowden’s mind; several factors need to be taken into account when designing the uniforms.
“They will be worn by a variety of people, so they need to be durable. There’s a lot of labour involved in making a decent garment so you do need to use decent materials. Many uniforms get caught short by being badly sewn and produced, or made with cheaper fabrics,” says Bowden.
The two-tone waistcoats, in sage and ochre, are made with Italian fabrics, and fit with the new, 1930s style building.
“It’s quite particular and the colours are striking.”
The Roxy Cinema opens to the public on Friday April 1.
