SICK of your jewellery? New handbag the wrong colour? Want some new shoes? Got no money? Then swap your accessories with someone else.
You won’t have to spend a cent to get your hands on pre-loved accessories although you pay to get into this weekend’s first accessory swap in Wellington – the Bubbles and Bling Accessory Swap Fundraiser.
Wellingtonians love swapping clothes, says Dress for Success Manager Cyndi Christensen, who is in charge of running the event.
“I think it [swapping] is a Wellington thing,” she says. “It’s not the same in Christchurch or Auckland.”
She says women generally have far more accessories than are needed, so swapping ones unused or unloved makes sense.
“According to fashion trends it’s all about accessories this season so we thought why not,” Christensen says.
If you bring in five items, you get five vouchers. Each voucher equals any accessory in store – shoes, handbags, jewellery, scarves, belts, hats, anything – although there is a quality screening process and any valuable pieces brought in are noted.
This year Dress for Success, a not-for-profit organisation, is celebrating ten years of providing women with work appropriate clothing for no cost, in turn giving women confidence to achieve their goals. Image consultant Daphne James will be there on Saturday to offer advice and if you’re nervous then a glass of bubbles may help.
“It’s so amazing to see a woman come through our door and she doesn’t know what to expect but you see her look in the mirror and there is a change in perception of herself. Some have burst into tears of happiness,” she says.
Bubbles and Bling Accessory Swap Fundraiser, Estadio, 17-19 Blair Street, 2-5.30pm, $30, April 2.
