Death and the Dreamlife of Elephants opening at Downstage.

Death and the Dreamlife of Elephants opening at Downstage.

TWO award winning New Zealand plays are back on the Wellington stage this week.
Downstage Theatre’s production of Death and the Dreamlife of Elephants, and Circa Theatre’s The Lead Wait both open on Friday and, both were originally commissioned by Bats Theatre, and both winning Chapman Tripp awards.
Death and the Dreamlife of Elephants tells the story of Julian, a Wellington man at a loss after the death of his mother, and the strange mystery revolving around an ornamental elephant. The play was first staged in 2009. For this restaging Downstage has partnered with theatre company, A Slightly Isolated Dog.
Jo Randerson’s The Lead Wait was originally staged at Bats in 1997. Circa’s production sees director and designer Andrew Foster back at the helm along with many of the original creative team.
The story revolves around brother and sister Leon and Juliet who live in a remote country house left to them by their parents. Leon spends his time digging holes, an obsession that has left the property looking like a war zone, while Juliet sleepwalks her way through an affair with their lodger. The sudden arrival of a mysterious visitor then unearths a dark secret from the past.
And for those whose appetite for comedy has only been whetted  by the Comedy Festival, there’s more laughs in Dirty Dusting, on for one night only at The Opera House.
Starring Suzanne Paul, Lynda Milligan and Jude Gibson, Dirty Dusting is a comedy about three “over the hill” cleaners who start a sex line and end up filthy rich.
Death and the Dreamlife of Elephants, Downstage Theare, May 13-June 4. The Lead Wait Circa Theatre, May 13-June 10. Dirty Dusting, The Opera House, May 12.
