“Looks so lame”
The three metre high stainless steel work, (above) by Auckland artist Virginia King is to be installed at Midland Park on Lambton Quay, next year.
Fergus Barrowman, editor at Victoria University Press said “my first thought was it looks so lame.
“I love most of what the Wellington Sculpture Trust have done, particularly along Cobham Drive.
“This is like an old fashioned poster for a school classroom.
“Mansfield was such a fiercely original modernist, it is odd to portray her in such a conventionally feminised style.”
Jenny Neligan of Bowen Galleries, would not comment on the specific work, but said, from the artists’ point of view, the selection process that the trust uses is flawed.
“Maybe they are not getting the quality of work required.”
