Boomers Behaving Badly, Jane Keller with Michael Nicholas, Williams on piano, Circa Two, to June 11. Reviewed by Garth Wilshere.
THIS intriguing show had its successful genesis at the St James Theatre Cabaret Season last year.
Streamlined, tightened and fine-tuned by Jane Keller and director KC Kelly, this new season takes place at Circa Two, an ideal and more intimate venue.
This time Keller has the benefit on piano of the accomplished, versatile and flexible Michael Nicholas Williams, who adds a dramatic line, voice and interjection or two on some numbers.
Keller has a strong personality and a big Broadway belt voice when required but also the subtlety to really sell a more pensive song, all were done with terrific style and humour.
Designed originally after her experiences at a 40th anniversary school reunion back in the States, Boomers picks out the freedoms and perils enjoyed and endured by the baby boomer (post WW II babies) generation, that most in the audience could relate to. The show was enormous fun heightened by Keller’s warmth and charisma in presentation.
Reference to boomers and all the issues implied in Grow Old With Me, Out of Love, and I Never Really Liked You That Much were hilarious, witty, and fun. In the more raunchy second half, were the wonderfully suggestive and sophisticated Paris Makes me Horny, and much more. You will be engaged in the scenario, ache with laughter from the humour, and love the singing, style and music. Don’t miss it and book now. It deserves to, and will, sell out!
