Highest honours
Prendergast, who was Mayor for three terms up til 2010, is named a companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for encouraging the development of Wellington as culture and arts capital.
Named an officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, Stephen Fleming became Black Caps captain in 1997, the youngest in New Zealand history at age 23, and is our most capped test player – with 111 appearances. Fleming led the side to 28 victories, before retiring from international cricket in 2008.
Also named an officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, Diedre Irons has made numerous appearances with the New Zealand and Christchurch Symphony Orchestras, and the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra. Ms Irons recently retired from her position as head of classical performance at the New Zealand School of Music to perform full-time. Ms Irons was awarded Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to music in 1989.
