A healthy sign of progress
Greater Wellington Regional Council chair, Fran Wilde, will head the panel of seven members. Others appointed are Wellington Employers’ Chamber of Commerce president Richard Stone, Kilkcaldie and Stains managing director John Milford, Enterprise Miramar Peninsula chair Allan Probert, Wellington Tenths Trust chief executive Liz Mellish, and vocal Wellywood sign opponent Andy Boreham.
A spokesperson for the airport told Capital Times the panel will meet later this week and the public will be asked to come up with suitable alternative signs through a formal consultation process. Alternatives will then go to a public vote. The spokesperson said a Wellywood sign would be one of the options in that vote.
The airport first announced plans for the Wellywood sign on hillside land on the Miramar Peninsular 16 months ago but after public opposition said it would consider other options. However, last month it said it would proceed with Wellywood and only later agreed to a consultation after immense public pressure.
Capital Times polls over recent weeks have shown 84 percent of readers are opposed to the Wellywood option with nearly 60 percent saying they don’t want a sign at all. The airport has stated having no sign is not an option.
Airport chief executive Steve Fitzgerald says while the airport will participate in the panel’s work as a facilitator it will not vote on the alternatives.
The airport wants a sign in place over the Miramar Cutting for the start of the Rugby World Cup in September.
