CHRISTCHURCH refugees are flooding Wellington’s hospitality market; with cafés and restaurants noting a large increase in applications from Canterbury.
Good Luck Bar on Cuba Street is one.
“I don’t really have time to talk right now because I have to deal with all these applications from Christchurch... I’m interviewing someone from there right now,” a representative says.
Good Luck has just hired Cantabrian Katie Evans, 25, who moved to Wellington a month ago.
“I would say probably about 90% of the people I know in hospitality are leaving, and around half of them have come to Wellington,” she says.
Ben Allerby says about a quarter of all applicants for front of house positions at Sweet Mother’s Kitchen are Cantabrians.
“I think it pulls the eye towards their CV a little bit more,” he says.
One recruitment agency says while they haven’t noticed a large increase in applicant numbers, Christchurch applications often look different than the rest, with cover letters sometimes stating ‘Help – I’m from Christchurch’.
Another restaurant manager says they have hired three Christchurch applicants in recent months, but they are “very flighty”, with two resigning straight away.
Jared Guy, also 25, moved north after the February earthquake left him jobless and homeless.
“Having to start all over in a new city is a pretty scary thing, but the job and staff [at Sandwiches] are fantastic. Most of the group of friends I hung out with in Christchurch have relocated, there’s only a handful left now.”
