GAVIN McGibbon says his new play is about allowing people to forget about winter and just have a good laugh.
The Wellington playwright takes a satirical poke at community theatre in his new play Hamlet Dies in the End, opening at Bats Theatre on June 28. His play follows a bunch of diverse people who come together as part of a Shakespeare workshop to mount a very bad version of Hamlet in the community hall.
It’s the fifth play from the 31 year old Victoria University PHD student and two of his former works Under the Hood and Holding On, have won Playmarket’s Write Out Loud competition.
“Hamlet’s always been my favourite Shakespeare play and I was interested in what it would be like if a group of run-of-the-mill people got together to do Hamlet, characters who have certain aspects of the play going on in their own lives,” McGibbon says.
He describes the cast of K.C. Kelly, Duncan Smith, Frank Edwards, Emma Kinane, Heather O’Carroll and Nathan Mudge as the “most amazing cast of all time.”
“Duncan Smith hasn’t acted in a play for 13 years so I’m pretty pleased he wanted to act in mine. I feel like I’ve won the lottery.”
