A Wellington fisherman knew he’d found something unusual when he caught a large spotted fish in Cook Strait this week.
Island Bay Marine Education Centre staff identified it as a spotted black groper, a tropical fish usually found in rocky reefs and estuaries in the far north of Queensland.
“This is quite a discovery which has DOC and Te Papa experts talking,” Julian Hodge from the marine education centre says. “It’s a long way from where we might usually see them.
Spotted black groper are highly territorial and may inhabit the same piece of reef for life. Their numbers are declining and they are a protected species.
The rare fish was caught live and is now on display at the marine education centre.
Recently another visitor from a different climate arrived in our region. An emperor  penguin, usually at home in the Antarctic, was found at Peka Peka Beach in Kapiti. The penguin has been moved to Wellington Zoo for care after it showed signs of deterioration in health. A Wellington Zoo spokesperson told Capital Times the penguin’s condition was stable.
