Liederabend
Garth WilshereLiederabend, Margaret Medlyn and Richard Greager, accompanied by Bruce Greenfield, Hunter Council Chamber, Victoria University, June 23. Reviewed by Garth Wilshere
THIS was a significant and meaty recital
programme featuring German Lied (song) by Schubert. Wolf and R. Strauss shared
between tenor Richard Greager and soprano Margaret Medlyn.
With the consistently excellent Bruce Greenfield on piano, Greager commenced
with six songs on texts from Willand Shakepeare, in To Sylvia, through to three German poets. Each song was beautifully
measured and characterised giving a salutary lesson on how to phrase a vocal
line, provide tonal colour and sing with artistry and control.
In Wolf’s Morike Lieder the songs
were shared between Medlyn and Greager, each giving dramatic performances. We
again experienced the quality and professionalism of these two singers, in
spite of Medlyn’s indication that she was bordering on a cold.
The final selection of R. Stauss songs from Medlyn were powerful, intense and
moody, beautifully sung, although occasionally they were over gestured.
With Greenfield masterful on the piano throughout, and two of our best local
singers providing affecting, emotional interpretations, this was true
music-making of the highest quality.
