Chinese welcome garden move

THE Wellington Chinese Garden Society says plans for buildings at Waitangi Park make it necessary to shift the proposed garden to Frank Kitts.
The society has welcomed the development of a design brief for Frank Kitts that includes a Chinese Garden as a way to get the garden built, after 10 years of talk.
"The Wellington Chinese Garden Society were pleased that the project was to be recognised by being placed at Waitangi Park close to Te Papa, as this is a very desirable location," says society Secretary Esther Fung.
"However, the later design that was developed located the Chinese Garden adjacent to the proposed transition building and atop a car park. This location has been the cause of increasing concern to members of the society because Chinese Gardens typically include a lake or body of water. There are design difficulties on top of a car park, as well as problems with the shadow of the transition building."
Wellington City Council is seeking public feedback on the Frank Kitts Park design brief. It is available at www.Wellington.govt.nz. Submissions close on November 23.
